Is Zoom safe and secure?

There has been a lot of media coverage in the last couple of weeks about security issues with Zoom, and I wanted to let you know that I've looked into them and I'm not particularly concerned.

What we do during a webinar OPD session is not particularly private or confidential. We don't discuss personal details or share private documents. If someone did happen to find their way into one of our sessions, I think they'd probably be pretty bored and leave pretty quickly :) All Zoom OPD webinars will be password protected, so it's important that you do not share the Zoom link or the password I send you with anyone, and that wil cut down the possiblity of someone unwanted joining our sessions to practically zero.

There has been some information suggesting people can hack into the Zoom app on an Apple Mac computer and use it to control the camera or microphone. The advice I've been given is that this is an issue with the Zoom app and only provides potential access to your microphone or camera while using that app; it doesn't provide the hacker with access to your computer at any other time. Zoom advises that they are working to fix this issue ASAP. UPDATE: This issue was resolved in an update to Zoom released on 2 April 2020. You can read more information here: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201361963-New-Updates-for-macOS

It's also important to realise that no program or app that connects your computer to the internet is 100% safe or secure. Part of living in an internet-connected world is managing security risk, and I've made the decision that our activities are pretty low risk.

There are no better video conferencing/webinar programs that I have been able to find; Zoom is pretty powerful and provides me with all the reporting I need to satisfy the Attorney-General's Department that you've completed your five hours of OPD for the year.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.
